Fall Wildlife Spotlight: Pahrump’s Wild Horses & Donkeys
Fall Wildlife Spotlight: Pahrump’s Wild Horses & Donkeys
As the desert shifts from summer into fall, you may start noticing more wild donkeys (burros) and even wild horses roaming around Pahrump.
Why They’re More Active in Fall
Water & Forage Changes: As plants dry up and water becomes scarce, these animals often travel farther to find resources.
Movement Patterns: Cooler evenings and seasonal shifts mean you may see them crossing roads or coming closer to town.
Herd Behavior: Fall can bring groups together as they search for new territory and mates.
What This Means for Locals & Pets
Do not approach or feed them. Even if they look tame, it’s dangerous (and illegal).
Be extra cautious on roads, especially at dawn and dusk when animals are more active.
Keep pets secure—curious dogs may see wild donkeys or horses as a threat, and burros especially can defend themselves fiercely.
These animals are a treasured part of our Nevada desert heritage, and respecting their space helps keep both them and our community safe.
At JAM Veterinary Services, we love the incredible wildlife that makes Pahrump so unique. And of course, we’re here to keep your pets healthy and safe while they share this desert home with our wild neighbors.
