Uses

Yunnan Baiyao is a Chinese herb blend used to help control bleeding in dogs, cats, and other species. This supplement has not been approved by the FDA.

Before this medication is given

Warnings for animals

•Do not use in animals:

‐That are allergic to it

‐With active blood clots or a history of blood clots

‐That are at risk for blood clots

•Use with caution in animals:

‐That are pregnant or nursing

•Yunnan Baiyao is considered an herbal supplement. It has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety or efficacy. Only use the specific products recommended by your veterinarian.

•Certain medications are not allowed in some animal competitions. Check rules and regulations when your animal is taking a medication.

•Wash your hands after handling any medication.

How do I give this medication?

•When giving by mouth, capsules may be given with or without food.

•When applying topically, sprinkle powder over the affected area(s) as directed by your veterinarian. If you are using capsules, open the capsule and sprinkle the contents over the affected area(s).

•Yunnan Baiyao products may include an "emergency" red pill in the packaging. Use this pill only as directed by your veterinarian.

Give exactly as your veterinarian has prescribed. Always follow the instructions on the prescription label.

Side effects

This supplement is generally well tolerated but mild vomiting or diarrhea can occur. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any unusual effects or have any concerns while your animal is receiving this supplement.

How will I know it's working?

This supplement should start having an effect within 1 to 2 hours. You may see a gradual improvement in your animal’s signs as the medication becomes fully effective.

Contact your veterinary clinic if your animal’s signs worsen or do not improve.

How long will the medication effects last?

•The duration of effect of Yunnan Baiyao is not well understood but it will likely stop working within 24 hours of the last dose.

How long do I give it for?

This medication may be given for different lengths of time. Give it for as long as your veterinarian tells you.

Missed dose

In most cases, if you miss a dose:

•Give it when you remember, then return to the regular dosing schedule.

If it is close to the time for the next dose:

•Skip the missed dose.

•Give the next dose at the next scheduled time.

•Continue the regular dosing schedule.

If you are unsure, call your veterinary clinic. Do not double-up or give extra doses.

Storage

•Store in the original container at room temperature.

•Keep capsules sealed in the blister pack until right before administration.

•Keep out of reach of children and animals.

Disposal

Do not flush this medication down the toilet or wash down the sink. Options for disposing of unused or expired medications include:

Drug take-back sites: This is preferred whenever possible. To find a site near you, contact your local law enforcement or waste management authorities.

Home disposal: Mix the medication in with coffee grounds or kitty litter, seal it in a plastic bag, and throw it away in the trash.

Do not save leftover medication or give it to others to use.
