Whether you have a sweet house bunny or a hardworking homestead rabbit, Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) is something every rabbit owner in Pahrump needs to be aware of.
π¨ What is RHDV?
RHDV (Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus) is a highly contagious and often fatal virus that affects both domestic and wild rabbits. It causes internal bleeding, organ failure, and in many cases, sudden death with little warning.
π¦ How is it contracted?
β Direct contact with infected rabbits (wild or domestic)
β Contaminated food, water, bedding, clothing, shoes, or hands
β Virus can survive for weeks in the environment
β Flies, insects, and other animals can carry the virus on their fur or feet
β οΈ Why it matters:
RHDV can wipe out entire colonies and is spreading across parts of the U.S., including the Southwest. It affects ALL rabbits, regardless of breed or purpose β pets, show animals, or meat rabbits.
