HIP DYSPLASIA IN DOGS – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!
HIP DYSPLASIA IN DOGS – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!
Hip dysplasia is a common joint condition we see here at JAM Veterinary Services, especially in larger breeds like:
• German Shepherds
• Labrador Retrievers
• Golden Retrievers
• Rottweilers
• Great Danes
What is it?
Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip joint doesn't develop properly, causing the bones to rub instead of glide smoothly. Over time, this leads to pain, inflammation, and arthritis.
Watch for warning signs like:
• Difficulty standing up or lying down
• Limping or stiffness, especially after exercise
• Bunny-hopping when running
• Decreased activity or reluctance to jump
• Swaying or “popping” hips when walking
Treatment options may include:
• Weight management
• Joint supplements
• Pain relief and anti-inflammatories
• Physical therapy
• In severe cases, surgery
Early detection can make all the difference!
