🚨 Male Cats & Urinary Blockages – What Every Cat Owner Should Know! 🚨
One of the most common emergencies we see in male cats is urinary blockage. This condition can become life-threatening in as little as 24 hours, and it requires immediate veterinary attention.
❗ What is a blockage?
A urinary blockage happens when your cat’s urethra becomes obstructed—often by crystals, mucus, or inflammation—preventing them from urinating. This is extremely painful and dangerous.
🔍 Warning Signs to Watch For:
- Straining to urinate
- Frequent trips to the litter box with little or no output
- Crying or vocalizing in pain
- Lethargy or hiding
- Vomiting or lack of appetite
- Licking around the genital area more than usual
💡 Tips for Prevention:
- Hydration is key! Encourage water intake by using pet fountains or adding water to meals.
- Wet food is your friend. Wet or canned food helps increase fluid intake, which can help keep the urinary tract healthy.
- Limit dry food to no more than 25–30% of their overall diet unless prescribed for a medical reason.
- Feed a urinary-healthy formula—many trusted brands offer veterinary diets that help prevent crystal formation.
- Keep stress low with routine, enrichment, and a clean litter box.
